70birds Resources

Books, authors, artists, illustrators, photographers, agencies, museums and various other sources are cited below.

Birdhouse Designs

Basic dimensions which simulate tree cavities preferred by individual bird species: square floor area, inside floor to ceiling height and entrance openings, are provided by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Geological Survey. All birdhouse designs, plans, assembly drawings and photos published at 70birds.com are creations and intellectual property of 70birds.

Bird Art

Century old wildlife art by naturalist-artists make excellent gifts and become family heirlooms that increase in value over time. You may agree that wildlife painted in their typical habitats, engaged in each particular species’ common foraging and nesting activities are the best illustrations for identification and for just plain enjoyment. Antiquarian natural history books are abundant and still widely available at reasonable prices.

The Book of Birds, by Gilbert Grosvenor, 1932, contains 950 natural and lifelike color portraits of all major North American bird species by Allan Brooks, a preeminent zoological illustrator of his time. Works in this book are protected by copyright and not in public domain.

Other artists of published works you may enjoy searching for include Louis Agassiz Fuertes, R. Bruce Horsfall, Rex Brasher, Chester A. Reed, Earnest Seton-Thompson, John L. Ridgway, Robert Ridgway, Edmund J. Sawyer and Frank C. Hennessey. They, other illustrators and photographers are listed below along with the books and authors with whom they are associated.

When searching for wildlife art you may encounter sellers of “antique art prints” or similar. Often these “prints” are simply pages removed from books with dozens of additional illustrations. You may be able to purchase these books for prices equivalent to one or two “antique prints”. Used book sellers sometimes describe a lower priced book’s condition as “breaker”, which suggests poor binder condition such that illustrations could be removed and sold or used for framing and displaying individual art pieces.

Books, Authors, Illustrators, Photographers, Ornithologists

Original file names of 50birds published images, art, photos, etc., included cross reference initials of artists, authors, and books. Newer web page publishing standards precluded this file naming system and it is no longer used. Some, not all image files originally published at 50birds are published on the newer 70birds site, which focuses exclusively on birdhouse and platform nesting birds. Some of the other images are published at The Ivory Bill.
