Bluebird boxes

Post by wimpydjd »

I started making boxes to sell in April, I have a bandsaw mill to cut lumber. I milled some sassafras logs from our property and started a road stand at the end of our driveway. I have sold 60 or so bluebird and chickadee boxes so far this year, not bad for a small country road. I like the design and I guess the bluebirds do too! My display box has a family in it,she layed 5 eggs and all hatched. A big surprise to me, the box was just pieces left to show the hinged door for cleaning. Hope you enjoy the pictures! Dave in MD

Hi Dave, they look great. Looks like the birds moved in to one of the bird houses on display. Are they along the road where people see them as they drive by? What a great way to sell a few houses.

Very nice. I like rustic like that and clearly birds do to. I’m not familiar with sassafras and was going to ask if it was a softwood, but I looked it up and discovered its roots are used for making root beer (didn’t know that), that it is very straight grained and it's one of the softer woods in the hardwood family. Maybe worth a try for woodworking.
