Birds in Colombia

Post by mb »

Some photos of birds from our travels in Colombia. I've tried to ID them all. There could be some errors.

Bananaquit

We used to have bananaquits visit our patio, bathe in a bird bath and take nectar from flowers. Some nested in a large mango tree in front of our house. Was nice. They got used to us, like hummingbirds do and visited when we were present. One day I saw an adolescent walking in the street in front of our house with a bananaquit in a small cage. Later I saw bananaquits and yellow canaries in cages for sale in our neighborhood tienda. Others sold birds on the street. We haven't seen any bananaquits for a few years.

We miss them. And I don't see the birds for sale anymore. I suppose the local populations were wiped. Maybe they will migrate short distances from near by populations and replenish, but with a lack of concern for protection of animal species it's hard to say.

Pygmy Owls

There is a research paper on the web regarding installing Pygmy Owl Birdhouses in Argentina and percentages of occupancy, which wasn't high, but that can be expected with many bird species. They also nest in birdhouses in the North America.
